Our Story

Built One Shelf
at a Time.

Fountain City Snacks did not begin in a factory or a boardroom. It began in 2009 with two brothers-in-law, a pickup truck, a handful of snack brands, and a belief that a local company could earn its place one store, one route, and one relationship at a time.

2009
TO
TODAY

Started in Kansas City. Built through early mornings, closed doors, a devastating underground warehouse fire, and the people who stepped forward when they did not have to.

The Journey

Grit, setbacks, and relationships.

This is the longer version of our story—the parts that do not fit on a product label, but explain why Fountain City Snacks exists and what the company means to us.

2009

KC Munchies Begins

KC Munchies started in March 2009, near the end of the Great Recession. Eric and Brian—brothers-in-law and lifelong Kansas Citians—wanted to build something of their own and bring better snacks to local convenience stores.

Both were still working full-time jobs. They built the company in the hours other people slept: driving routes through the night, stocking shelves before sunrise, catching sleep in the truck, and doing it all again the next weekend.

EARLY

Finding Brands Willing to Take a Chance

The road eventually led to Chicago, where the long-established CJ Vitner company reluctantly agreed to let us carry its products farther from home than anyone had before. That opportunity led to more brands, more routes, and more stores.

Over time, the lineup grew to include Snyder's-Lance, Snack King, Rap Snacks, King Henry's, Carley's Brand Cookies, and others. The business eventually served more than 200 stores throughout the Kansas City metro.

THE
FIGHT

Plenty of People Said No

Growth was never smooth. Larger competitors had the power to push smaller distributors around. Banks said no. Recessions changed the rules. The company kept moving anyway—earning shelf space, keeping promises, and finding another path whenever the obvious one closed.

2018

The Interstate Underground Fire

In October 2018, disaster struck. Our warehouse, located inside the Interstate Underground caves beneath Kansas City, was destroyed by fire. Inventory, equipment, and years of work disappeared in a single event.

What happened next says more about our company than the fire itself. Another distributor offered warehouse space without charging rent. Suppliers shipped products on credit so we would have something to sell and a way to generate the money needed to pay them back. Store owners stayed with us. Customers kept believing in us.

Nobody had to do those things. Nobody had a guarantee that helping us would ever benefit them. The business survived because relationships mattered when spreadsheets did not.

2020

Still on the Road

During COVID, convenience-store distribution did not stop. We remained on the road as essential workers, supplying local stores while almost everything else felt uncertain.

2024

Fountain City Snacks Becomes Official

After years of selling other companies' products, we were ready to create a Kansas City snack brand of our own. On December 10, 2024, KC Munchies received the registered trademark for Fountain City Snacks.

The brand was built around bold flavors, local identity, strong shelf presence, and a commitment to give something back. A portion of each sale supports the City of Fountains Foundation and the fountains, sculptures, and memorials that help define Kansas City.

BELTON

From Distributor to Maker

The next step required a permanent home. We purchased a 6,300-square-foot building in Belton, Missouri, and began converting it into a warehouse, popcorn production facility, and retail destination.

  • A warehouse supporting our local store network
  • A production floor for cooking, coating, and packaging popcorn
  • A retail space where customers can sample flavors and shop in person
  • Viewing windows into the production area
2025

Welcoming Miller's Gourmet Popcorn

While the Belton facility was taking shape, another opportunity arrived: the chance to acquire Miller's Gourmet Popcorn, a Kansas City brand known for its movie-theatre roots, classic recipes, and loyal customers.

We acquired the Miller's brand, equipment, and recipes so its legacy could continue. Miller's products are now made in the same Belton facility using the original recipes and the same small-batch attention customers remember.

TODAY

Two Brands, One Kansas City Mission

Fountain City Snacks is built for convenience stores, grab-and-go snacking, bold everyday flavors, regional retail growth, and premium Reserve gifting.

Miller's Gourmet Popcorn serves online customers, gifts, specialty flavors, tins, and visitors to our Belton retail space.

The brands follow different paths, but they share the same production home, the same people, and the same commitment to making something Kansas City can be proud of.

What Shaped Us

More than milestones.

These are not just events on a timeline. They explain who we are today.

01

Started Small

A pickup truck, a few brands, and every new shelf earned the hard way.

02

Built Relationships

Store owners, suppliers, customers, and route relationships became the real foundation.

03

Survived the Fire

The Interstate Underground fire erased the assets, but not the trust built over the years.

04

Kept Building

Through COVID, the Miller's acquisition, Belton production, new flavors, and original music.

The Story in Music

Hear the Journey.

"One Shelf at a Time" tells this story as a song—the earliest routes, the pressure from industry giants, the banks that said no, the fire that destroyed everything, and the determination to rebuild.

It is not a jingle. It is the story of how Fountain City Snacks became what it is today.
